The 2019 DOE test change

DOE's June 13, 2016 final rule set current energy conservation standards for dehumidifiers manufactured on or after June 13, 2019. The capacity test moved from 80°F/60% relative humidity to 65°F/60% RH — closer to a real basement. Cooler air holds less moisture, so the identical physical machine condenses fewer pints during the test and earns a lower official rating, even though nothing about the hardware changed. Old-to-new pint conversion

As a general, ENERGY-STAR-sourced pattern (not a fixed formula), a portable unit that earned roughly "50-pint" before 2019 earns roughly "30-pint" today; a "70-pint" unit before now earns roughly "40-45 pints." The reduction runs in the rough neighborhood of 30-40% for portable units and a smaller 13-18% for whole-home/ducted units. Full table: The Pint Rating Conversion Index. IEF replaced EF

Alongside the 2019 test change, Integrated Energy Factor (IEF) replaced the older Energy Factor (EF) metric. Unlike EF, IEF accounts for the energy a dehumidifier draws even while cycled off, so efficiency comparisons between a pre-2019 EF-rated unit and a current IEF-rated unit are not directly comparable either. DOE product classes

Portable dehumidifiers fall into three DOE product classes by capacity: Class 1 (25.00 pints/day or less), Class 2 (25.01-50.00 pints/day), and Class 3 (50.01 pints/day or more). Whole-home and ducted dehumidifiers are tested and rated under a separate product class with its own pint scale — never compare a whole-home rating directly to a portable rating.

AHAM sizing by room size and dampness

Correct sizing needs two inputs: square footage and dampness level (moderately damp, very damp, wet, or extremely wet), assuming a standard 8-foot ceiling. Taller ceilings need more capacity — AHAM's adjustment factors run roughly 1.13x at 9 feet up to about 1.5x at 12 feet. ENERGY STAR and "Most Efficient"

ENERGY STAR certification — and its higher "Most Efficient" tier — is based on a unit's IEF, not its raw pint capacity. A smaller-capacity certified unit can be more efficient per pint removed than an uncertified larger one.
