The Pint Rating Conversion Index

In 2019 the U.S. Department of Energy changed the test conditions used to rate dehumidifier capacity — from 80°F/60% relative humidity to 65°F/60% RH. The identical physical machine condenses less water in cooler air, so its official pint rating dropped, generally by somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-40% for portable units. An old "70-pint" dehumidifier is, roughly, today's "40-45 pint" model. This page is the normalized conversion table — a reference dataset, not a buying guide.

The one thing to know: In a final rule published June 13, 2016, the U.S. Department of Energy changed how portable dehumidifier capacity is measured, effective for units manufactured on or after June 13, 2019. AHAM coverage by room size and dampness level

Sizing a dehumidifier takes two inputs: square footage AND how damp the space is. This table uses current (2019-standard) pint ratings and assumes a standard 8-foot ceiling — for taller ceilings, AHAM's own adjustment factors run roughly 1.13x at 9 feet up to about 1.5x at 12 feet.
